TOP QUESTIONS
  • How do I track my order?

  • Will my arm have circulation issues or "fall asleep" in the Comfort Channel?

Contrary to what some might believe, the Comfort Channel is not conducive to numbness or tingling in your arm. When a body part “falls asleep”, as the saying goes, it is due to lack of circulation, or not enough blood reaching the body part. When your arm starts to tingle or loses feeling it is caused by a position you are in that is cutting off this necessary circulation that supplies oxygen to the nerves that run between your neck and your arm. Nerves have their own blood supply, so pressure on a nerve cuts off that blood supply and the nerve becomes starved for oxygen and shuts down. This happens often on traditional flat mattresses as you are forced to overextend your shoulders and arms into positions in which they are not meant to rest, which can cut off this circulation. While side sleeping on a flat mattress you are forced to apply unavoidable pressure on these body parts which results in the discomfort and lack of circulation that can cause this numbness. The SONU Sleep System’s patented Comfort Channel design helps to greatly relieve these pressures on your arms, and with this relief comes improved circulation and reduced chances of numbness.

Some may look at the SONU design and believe that because your arms are below the rest of your body, you may have an increased risk of circulation issues or numbness. This is a common misconception, but is not the case - here’s why. Your arms are naturally below your heart when you are upright, walking or sitting, throughout the day. Your arms never tingle in this position because they are receiving the correct amount of circulation. The Comfort Channel enables your arms to also rest below your heart, as if you were upright, resulting in your arms receiving the correct amount of circulation – which actually reduces the chances of circulation issues or numbness, compared to flat mattresses. We have designed the Comfort Channel system with all of this in mind. You will be impressed at the elevated level of comfort and truly deep sleep you will enjoy on your SONU, enabled in part by the improvement in circulation your body will experience.

For more information about the causes of circulation issues and numbness while sleeping, please visit: https://www.sleepfoundation.org/physical-health/numbness-in-hands-while-sleeping
  • What kind of bed frame or platform should I use?

The Sonu Sleep Mattress can be used on a base that is a platform, box foundation, or an adjustable bed frame, but it needs to be sturdy. We highly recommend the use of an adjustable foundation for sleepers that often enjoy sitting up. For foundations with cross slats, keep in mind all slats should be no more than 3 inches apart for optimal support under the mattress. We suggest avoiding springs in your foundation to prevent a sagging mattress. Additionally, the head of the mattress (the top end with the negative space “Comfort Channel”) should be placed flush against a sturdy vertical surface, such as a wall or headboard.
  • Do SONU Sheets need to be used with my SONU Sleep System mattress?

Yes, the SONU Sleep System mattress is a unique shape that requires the use of our custom fitted SONU Sheets. Each SONU mattress comes with a full set of custom fitted sheets in white (or cream if white is out of stock). We also offer sheet sets in additional color shades to compliment your décor.

The amount of the fee is set and approved by each state, not by individual retailers. For more details visit MattressRecyclingCouncil.org or call +1 (855) 229-1691. • Does the SONU accommodate very tall sleepers?

Yes, the SONU Cali King size is designed for tall sleepers. It is important to note that because of the Comfort Channel design there is extra space needed at the head of the bed, so if a sleeper that is 6'5" or taller fully extends, their feet may protrude over the end of the mattress approximately 2 inches more than on a traditional mattress. This does not concern most tall sleepers, as when side-sleeping the knees are bent and everything fits as desired.
  • Can sheets from other companies be used with the SONU Sleep System?

No, the patented SONU fitted sheet within each SONU Sheet Set is required by the SONU mattress to fit into the Comfort Channel's unique negative space.

    Twin XL Set
    1 FITTED SHEET: 38" x 80" x 17"

  • What materials are the SONU Sheets made from?

The SONU Sheets are made from top quality 100% long staple cotton with 300 thread count for a smooth, cooling, breathable, and luxurious feel to the touch.

Please note that contrary to popular belief, thread count does not necessarily equate to quality and smoothness, and that a thread count of 300 for high-end long staple cotton is top quality. Rest assured, we have selected the best materials to make sure these beautiful sheets perfectly compliment and complete the unique SONU sleeping experience.
  • Do any sheets come with my SONU Sleep System?

Yes! One SONU Sheet Set in white (or cream if white is out of stock) comes included with every SONU mattress purchase. Additional sheet sets and colors must be purchased separately.

Watch The Video - Setting Up Your SONU
  • Does the SONU need to be against a headboard or wall?

Yes, make sure that your SONU’s backboard area (the head wall of the Comfort Channel that runs the width of the mattress) is pressed firmly and consistently flush against a solid, flat, supportive, vertical surface (e.g. a wall or sturdy headboard) at all times. This is very important as any inconsistent presence of this backboard support can damage your SONU, resulting in undesirable lack of support for a sleeper and the possible voiding of your SONU’s warranty. To this end, before going to sleep each night, make sure the mattress is pushed against the wall or headboard firmly to ensure your SONU continues to deliver countless nights of ergonomic support, unique levels of comfort and brilliantly deep sleep.

Watch The Video - Setting Up Your SONU
  • Do the Support Pillows ever need to be flipped?

Yes, flip and carefully fluff each Support Pillow before each night’s sleep or when you feel it is necessary to help reset their shape after molding to your shape the night prior, and to ensure they continue to consistently provide the desired level of support for your head, neck and shoulders. We also recommend keeping the zippers on the pillowcases facing towards the backboard of the Comfort Channel to minimize any interaction or undesirable contact with them during the night.
  • Can the height of the Support Pillows be adjusted to my preference?

Yes, you may customize your head and neck support height by adding or removing layers within the Support Pillows. Open the zipper on side of each Support Pillow to access the individual foam layers. We recommend altering the height slightly by only adjusting layers in one of the two Support Pillows in each sleeper’s vertical stack. As your SONU continues to mold to your own personal shape over time keep in mind that you can continue to adjust your head height support to compliment any changes in your sleeping positions you may embrace.
  • How do I install the custom fitted sheet on the SONU?

When positioning the fitted sheet make sure the seam that runs the width of the middle of the bed is parallel with and aligned directly on top of the lower edge of the Comfort Channel. Pull slack from the foot end of the fitted sheet up towards the Channel to allow more space in the corners and more room in the Channel for the Support Pillows and your arms while sleeping.

Watch The Video - Installing The SONU Sheets
  • How do I move the SONU without damaging it?

When moving your SONU to a new room, new house, or simply repositioning it after it has been uncompressed and removed from its original delivery packaging, make sure to only grasp the main body area of the mattress, avoiding the Comfort Channel area as its structure can be damaged by applying pressure where it is not designed to be applied. Pushing or pulling the Comfort Channel walls or backboard while moving the mattress can tear the structure and jeopardize the overall performance of your mattress. Be sure to move with care with at least two people – one grasping the foot end and one grasping at least 6 inches below the lower edge of the Comfort Channel.
  • How should I position myself while sleeping on my side in the SONU?

This is what the SONU was designed for. When climbing into bed get into your side-sleeping position you’ve grown accustomed to on your old traditional mattress, only this time extend your arm that’s normally pressed to the surface down into the Comfort Channel, in the gap between the lower edge of the channel and the lower edge of the Support Pillows. This space allows relief from the otherwise constant pressure on your shoulder, neck and chest, resulting in better breathing and a high level of comfort.

We recommend two top pillows for each sleeper at all times. During side-sleeping place one pillow on an angle to bridge the Channel gap while supporting your head, neck and upper torso, and the other pillow can be hugged with your arm that’s above the channel and/or placed to provide cushioning between your knees.

Position I - Your lower arm extends parallel to the Comfort Channel with your armpit over the top edge, your elbow, bent at about 90 degrees, rests at the bottom of the channel while your wrist rests against the upper side wall of the channel. This position is comfortable for sleeping, but also ideal for using a device or reading a book as your hands are free while being comfortably supported.

Position II - Similar to Position I, except your lower forearm is rotated toward the backboard of the Comfort Channel, below both of the Support Pillows, at about a 45-degree angle from the lower edge of the Channel. This position helps open your shoulders, straightening your spine, and allowing more space for your chest, making an excellent position for sound sleep.

Position III - Similar to Position II, except your elbow is bent at about 100 degrees enabling your forearm to raise above the lower Support Pillow, but still below the upper Support Pillow, making both Support Pillows into a kind of opposing triangles structure – very comfortable for upper back and shoulder relief while sleeping.

Watch The Video - Side Sleeping Pillow Positions
  • How should my partner and I position ourselves for the most comfortable "couple's" sleep in the SONU?

When climbing into bed with your partner try side-sleeping while facing the same direction, or more commonly referred to as “spooning”. The Comfort Channel finally makes this position uniquely comfortable, convenient and satisfying, allowing deep sleep while in this position that normally causes discomfort and less circulation in the arms for one or both sleepers. Position yourselves so that your heads flank the center gap between the two stacks of Support Pillows, allowing each of you to assume side-sleeping positions I, II or II, as described at the top of this page. The “big spoon” can also use the center gap space for an additional arm position for further aeration, with the elbow at the base of the Channel and the wrist at the top of the center gap. We recommend two top pillows for each sleeper at all times, so four total when sleeping with your partner. During “spooning”, use one pillow for your head and the additional pillow between your knees or next to you, ready to be hugged if rolling to the other side.

Watch The Video - Side Sleeping Pillow Positions
  • How should I position myself if sleeping on my back in the SONU?

Before climbing into bed make sure to place one top pillow over the lower edge gap of the Comfort Channel. This will bridge the space and provide a level sleeping area that you can adjust to support your head and neck at the desired height for maximum back sleeping comfort.

We recommend two top pillows for each sleeper at all times. During back-sleeping the additional pillow can be used to further prop up your upper back and head area or to elevate your knees for better breathing throughout the night.

We also recommend using The Comfort Insert for back sleeping. It makes the SONU Sleep System more akin to a flat mattress, but still with some give for your shoulders. This versatility can be helpful in many scenarios including couples who sleep differently from one another (e.g. a side sleeper and a back sleeper) and for those who simply prefer less space in the Comfort Channel.

Watch The Video - Back Sleeping Pillow Positions
  • How should I position myself when sitting up in the SONU?

When climbing into bed to watch television, use a device or read a book, sitting up with pillows behind your back is a popular position. We recommend placing at least two pillows behind your back, making sure you’re not sitting on top of the Support Pillows, as well as one pillow above the lower Comfort Channel gap for extra lower back support.

For added comfort an additional pillow can be placed below the knees. We also highly recommend the use of an adjustable foundation for sleepers that often enjoy sitting up, as the need for placing all of these pillows, as described above, is eliminated. The SONU is compatible with any foundation that moves in this fashion to aid in sitting up.

We also recommend using The Comfort Insert also functions as a backrest for sitting up in a SONU if you don't have an adjustable foundation.

  • How should I position myself when sleeping on my stomach in the SONU?

When climbing into bed get into your stomach-sleeping position you’ve grown accustomed to on your old traditional mattress, only this time allow your shoulders to relax that are normally overextended, by placing your arms down into Comfort Channel. Make a diamond shape with your arms around your head while resting your forearms one layer down on top of the Support Pillow second from the top.

We recommend two top pillows for each sleeper at all times. During stomach-sleeping, use one pillow for your head and the additional pillow next to you, ready to be hugged if rolling to the side.

Note - The SONU's Comfort Channel system is advantageous to stomach sleepers in the same way as side sleepers. Instead of having to overextend shoulders to lay flat, a stomach sleeper can immerse their arms below the surface to alleviate pressures and tensions that are unavoidable with all other mattresses. It is also important to note that stomach sleepers generally benefit from firmer mattresses to prevent arching of the lower back. As the SONU's Sink-In support system is on the softer side to allow side sleepers' hips to be cradled while aligning the spine, the level of firmness in this area may not be optimal for some true stomach sleepers that never shift to their side.

  • How many top pillows should I have with me in the SONU?

We recommend two top pillows for each sleeper at all times. During side-sleeping place one pillow on an angle to bridge the Channel gap while supporting your head, neck and upper torso, and the other pillow can be hugged with your arm that’s above the channel and/or placed to provide cushioning between your knees.

For the best pillows designed to pair with your SONU Sleep System, we highly recommend getting a 2 pack of The SONU Top Pillow Deluxe for each sleeper.

  • What's the difference between the Support Pillows and Top Pillows?

The SONU Support Pillows come with every mattress and are specifically designed to fill the Comfort Channel while allowing room for your arms and shoulders. 4 Support Pillows come with every mattress - 2 for each sleeper (2 total for Twin XL). On the other hand, the SONU Top Pillows are sold separately and are to be placed on top of the Support Pillows to cushion your head.

The Top Pillows can be your favorite head pillows that you used with your old mattress, but we highly recommend the best pillows designed to pair with your SONU Sleep System - a 2 pack of The SONU Top Pillow Deluxe for each sleeper.

  • Is it necessary to have Top Pillows with my SONU Sleep System?

Yes, this is important. Do not sleep on a SONU unless you have a Top Pillow under your head.

For the best pillows designed to pair with your SONU Sleep System, we highly recommend getting a 2 pack of The SONU Top Pillow Deluxe for each sleeper.

  • Does SONU make a mattress pad?

The main purpose of a mattress pad is to provide additional comfort to the mattress top layer. The pad typically covers the surface of the mattress and lays in between a mattress and bedding. The SONU Sleep System is already designed for maximum comfort with a 2 inch thick layer of plush serene material covering the entire surface. This is like having the highest quality mattress pad already built in, so an additional pad is not necessary. It is also good to note that all materials in the SONU mattress are allergy resistant, so any kind of cover designed for allergy related purposes for other mattress is also unnecessary with the SONU.
  • How do I fold the SONU Fitted Sheet’s extra Comfort Channel material?

Folding the custom-made fitted sheet that comes in the SONU Sheet Set is quite simple and very similar to folding any traditional fitted sheet. The extra material for the Comfort Channel is easily tucked within itself by aligning the inner bottom corners of the Channel space with its outer top corners in order to flatten the extra material. We recommend laying the sheet on a flat surface to align the corners in this fashion before folding the sheet in half lengthwise, then continuing to make smaller folds per personal preference. Of course, all of this is optional or for cosmetic purposes – certainly fold in any manner that suits you best.

  • Will the Support Pillows move while I'm asleep, or let my head dip into the Comfort Channel?

The SONU’s Support Pillows have been designed to allow enough space for your arms and shoulders within the Comfort Channel, while providing vertical support for your head and neck. The size, weight and outer material have all been engineered to make sure the Support Pillows stay in position where they are meant to so you get a comfortable night’s sleep every night.

  • Can I fill in the Comfort Channel of my SONU mattress temporarily?

Yes! We produce an accessory called the SONU Comfort Insert that does precisely that. Install the Comfort Insert to fill in one side of the Comfort Channel on Queen and King sizes, and the entire Channel on a Twin XL. Buy the 2 pack to fill in both sides of Queens and Kings.

Watch The Video - The Comfort Insert
  • How does the SONU Comfort Insert work?

The SONU Comfort Insert is an accessory that fills in the Comfort Channel, essentially turning the SONU Sleep System into a normal flat mattress. This can be helpful for sitting up in bed if not using an adjustable foundation, or for couples who sleep differently from one another (a side sleeper and a back sleeper, say). A single SONU Comfort Insert fills in only one side of the Comfort Channel of Queen and King size SONUs, and the entire Channel of the Twin XL size. So if you'd like to fill in the entire Channel of a Queen or King, please purchase the 2 pack.

  • I'm a side sleeper but my partner is not - is there a way that half of our SONU can be flat?

Yes, with the SONU Comfort Insert you can fill in half of the Comfort Channel in order to further customize the mattress to your personal needs.

  • Is thread count important for sheets?

The short answer is no! Contrary to common belief, higher thread count does not equal higher quality sheets. A better-quality fiber with a lower thread count will feel softer and stand up to washing better than a lower-quality fiber with a higher thread count. The thread count metric has been hyped as a type of gimmick by manufacturers to be able to sell low quality products for higher prices.

We’ve been trained to associate high count numbers with luxury - after all, we need some way to measure quality. But if you run this logic by any textile expert, you’ll be met with adverse information, as this assumption is incorrect. As linen expert Julian Tomchin told The New York Times, “once you get beyond 400 threads per square inch, be suspicious.” 1

By definition, thread count is simple - it's the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric, by adding the verticals (called the “warp”) to the horizontals (the “filling”). But in reality, some manufacturers aren’t that straightforward. Think about it - only so many pieces of thread can fit into this set amount of space. It turns out that this means the number for a good thread count is between 300 and 400, depending on breathability and other performance goals. That means if you see sheet sets touting 600, 800 or 1000 thread count, the manufacturer has employed a deceivingly creative method to reach that number in a ploy to be able to raise the price!

There are many factors that go into what produces a quality sheet product, and thread count is only a small portion of the equation. Fabric content, fiber quality and finish are the big ones. Here at SONU, we’re proud to bring you top quality materials by paying close attention to the factors that actually matter when it comes to our custom sheets. After thorough testing of sheet materials in conjunction with our SONU Sleep System mattress, we’ve determined the best performance with our 300 thread count long staple cotton. Any higher thread count would diminish our ideal breathability and performance goals.

We’ve found the sweet spot with our top quality 100% cotton fabric for its heat wicking, breathability, durability and high level of softness - available in three colors to suit different decors and personal preferences. Please visit the SONU Sheets page for more details.

  • Why does the SONU cost more than some other mattresses?

When we set out on this journey to create the world’s first mattress for side sleepers that incorporates groundbreaking innovations unlike anything else on the market, we had to fight against the grain in an industry that hasn’t changed much in decades - all while battling dramatically increased cost of goods, shortage of labor and supply chain delays caused in large part by the pandemic. Other companies selling traditional flat mattresses that consist of only a few parts, buy low quality goods in bulk and manufacturer their products overseas, while incorporating corner-cutting processes into their production. By vast contrast, we create each SONU Sleep System by hand, as our design requires 26 custom components, top quality materials and the highest level of detail at which we hold ourselves as a brand. Every SONU is assembled by our skilled technicians in either our California or Connecticut factory locations, then thoroughly inspected before we package with care and FedEx to your door. This is why our products have a higher price than some others on the market – everything about SONU is entirely unique and of the highest quality – and you feel these incredible advantages every night when you immerse into comfort. You will discover that no other mattress even comes close.

We’ve partnered with the financing companies, Affirm and Koalafi, to be able to offer attractive monthly payment options. If this is something you’re interested in, it is good to note that Affirm extends your timeline and drops your monthly payment amount when your total is above $3,000. For example, if you select a queen size SONU and want to get our advertised $84 per month, then add an accessory to your cart (a Top Pillow Deluxe or our Mattress Removal option perhaps) so your total is just above $3,000 – then you will see the monthly payment price decrease. Once everything looks good, proceed by checking out and selecting ‘Affirm’ when you get to the payment section. Koalafi also offers payments over time with their lease-to-own program, which can be beneficial to customers who are still building credit. For details please visit the Financing page.

We just know you’ll be amazed with how our invention will transform your quality of sleep and rejuvenate you every night. We truly hope you join us and embark on a new chapter of comfort in your life.

Thank you so very much and sweet dreams,
    The SONU Sleep Team

  • What does the Extra Support Kit do?

The Extra Support Kit solves any issue that a sleeper may have with a lack of support in the upper torso, shoulders, neck and head area by using a specifically engineered wedge with panel extension shape that pairs with the Comfort Channel of the SONU Sleep System mattress, as well as an additional panel shape for customization of further support where needed. If a sleeper is experiencing a sinking feeling when using the Comfort Channel or doesn’t feel level during the night, the Extra Support Kit will rectify these situations.
  • Is the Extra Support Kit customizable?

For Queen, King and Cali King mattress sizes, the Extra Support Kit comes in 2 halves for easy installation and individualized support configurability under each side of a SONU mattress, totaling 4 pieces in each kit. This means you and your partner can enjoy different areas of support on each side of the bed. (The Twin XL kit contains a single wedge and panel, totaling 2 pieces.)

  • How do I set up the Extra Support Kit?

    1. Install. Place the 2 inch thick foam wedge under your SONU mattress with the thicker end flush against the headboard area. Make sure that the wedge is positioned parallel to your mattress to provide support evenly across the Comfort Channel.

    2. Position. If your mattress is a Queen, King or Cali King size, repeat step 1 for both wedges in your kit – one under each side of the bed. Make sure both wedges are positioned fully under the mattress, symmetrically and parallel to the headboard area, spanning the entire width of the mattress.

    3. Customize. Place the 1 inch thick foam panels below your lower back area for added lumber support if needed. Or, after sleeping on and testing the feel of the foam wedge, more support is desired, move the foam panel to where additional support is needed.
