2. Donate

Many charities accept lightly used mattresses, and most of them offer free home pick-up service or convenient local drop-off locations.

National Furniture Bank is an organization that offers an online database for individuals and families in need of furniture, especially mattresses. Some Furniture Bank locations offer free pick up.

The Salvation Army has a large network of sites that accept mattress donations, and you can schedule a time for them to pick up your old mattress.

FreeCycle is 100% nonprofit and focused on easing the burden of landfills. It is an online network that allows you to connect with those in need and give your mattress to be reused.

Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to making sure people around the world have a safe place to call home, and accept mattress donation drop-offs at many locations.

3. Recycle

Approximately 20 million mattresses end up in landfills every year in the U.S., posing a hazard to our environment. The following services are dedicated to preventing this by helping you recycle your old mattress.

Bye-Bye Mattress was created to help counteract the devastating effects of overflowing landfills, and is one of the best mattress recycling center locators in the U.S.

Earth 911 provides a search system that uses your location to find recycling centers closest to you that accept mattresses.

100 Mattress Recycling Centers is a list of recycling locations in major metropolitan areas nationwide. When recycling your mattress it is important to remember that most recycling centers will not take mattresses if they're heavily stained, soiled or infested with bed bugs.

4. Pick Up Service

Your mattress retailer may offer an assistance program for having your mattress picked up at home.

LoadUp is the service that SONU works with to provide mattress removal for the very small number of customers who choose to return their SONU. Pickups can be scheduled on their site.

5. Break Down & Reuse

Most traditional innerspring mattresses can be reused by disassembling into recyclable parts, sold for scrap, or used around your home for various projects.

Steel springs can be bundled and sold as scrap to be reincarnated as new steel components, such as wind turbines. Foam material can be reused as carpet padding or moving blankets, and when recycled, can be used as biomass fuel. Wood parts can be reused as landscaping mulch, stuffing for pet beds, or as scrap material for a variety of projects.

Make extra cash by selling shredded foam if your old mattress was made of foam - or reused in couch cushions, carpet padding and even building insulation.

Note: Innerspring mattresses contain sharp components - disassemble with caution.
